Why IVET?

Frequently Asked Question

What is VETDSS?

VETDSS stands for “Vocational Education and Training Delivered to Secondary Students.”

It is essentially another term for VET programs offered within high schools (often called VET in Schools, or VETiS, in some states)

VETDSS programs allow students to work towards a vocational qualification (such as a Certificate I, II or III) while completing secondary school. These programs give students practical skills and a nationally recognised certification in various industries, all before they graduate secondary school.

In short, VETDSS = secondary school VET courses that count toward both an industry qualification and the student’s schooling.

Does our school need to be an RTO to offer IVET courses?

No, your school does not need to become an RTO (Registered Training Organisation) to run VET courses with IVET. One of the key advantages of partnering with IVET Institute is that IVET is the authorised RTO and takes care of all the accreditation, compliance, and issuance of qualifications.

In this arrangement, IVET as the RTO “auspices” the program, meaning IVET oversees the training and assessment standards, provides the course material and assessment tools, and awards the certificates, while the school delivers the training to students on the ground. This saves the school from the significant effort of maintaining RTO registration and compliance.

Who can enroll in VET courses at secondary school?

VET programs delivered through schools are typically available to students in Year 10, 11 and 12 in secondary school.

Many schools start offering VET subjects from Year 10 as an introduction, with most students undertaking the bulk of VET training during Year 11 and 12. The exact year levels can depend on the school and program – for example, some career taster or pre-vocational programs might be open to Year 9 students, but generally VETDSS is focused on the senior secondary years.

Students (usually with parental and school approval) choose VET courses as part of their elective subjects alongside their standard curriculum.

Are IVET’s courses nationally recognised qualifications?

Yes – all programs offered by IVET Institute are nationally recognised VET qualifications. IVET Institute is an accredited RTO (40548), so the certificates that students earn (e.g. a Certificate II in Business or Certificate III in Health Services) are identical to those issued by any accredited training provider in Australia. These qualifications are recognised nationwide by employers and further education institutions.

In other words, a certificate issued by IVET Institute carries the same status under the Australian Qualifications Framework as one issued by a TAFE or other college – it’s portable and credible beyond just the school.
